Call for Papers

Friday, December 4, 2009 – Papers Due

This year’s theme:  “Art, Ethics & Democracy”

We are soliciting papers on any combination of aesthetics, valuation, and/or the implications of these for societal functioning. Topics might include the production of mass culture as a tool for social control, imagination in the arts as a basis for social movements, or the limitations placed on the arts by modes of societal organization. We are also open to interdisciplinary work from fields such as Museum Studies, Cultural Studies, Art Education, etc. on ethical debates within their fields relating to the display, collection, funding, and public presence of art.  Submission topics from these fields might include public ownership of art as cultural heritage or demands for repatriation and their significance for differing claims for justice. Submissions related to any of the aspects of this year’s theme are welcome.

We are also soliciting faculty volunteers to act as moderators for sessions (please include area of interest and available times).

Graduate students should submit the full paper (suitable for presentation in approximately twenty minutes or roughly 3,000-4,000 words) and a 250 word abstract.  All submissions should be prepared for blind review.

Submissions should be made via email to wcuapc@gmail.com

Anyone interested in assembling a panel should contact us via email.
