> With his stress on the constellation of art, religion and politics, Walter
> Benjamin has become a key thinker for the contemporary debate on the role of
> religion in the public sphere. Benjamin placed philosophy –the practice of
> criticism- at the service of art, seeking to release a political and
> theological potential he called “messianic”, far from every theocracy and
> fundamentalism.

> Benjamin’s urgent demand for the “politicization of art” as an antidote to
> the fascist “æsthetizationof politics” is well known. The aim of this
> international conference is to understand and discuss the bridge between the
> aforementioned demand and the contemporary attempts, by many thinkers
> influenced by Benjamin, to “politicize theology”, now understood as an antidote to
> the fundamentalist theologization of politics.

> Su insistencia en las convergencias entre arte, religión y política ha
> hecho de Benjamin un pensador clave en el debate contemporáneo sobre el rol de
> la religión en la esfera pública. Benjamin puso la filosofía -la práctica de
> la crítica- al servicio del arte para liberar un potencial político y
> teológico al cual denominó ‘mesiánico’, en oposición a toda teocracia y
> fundamentalismo.

> En esta conferencia se buscará entender y discutir el puente entre, por una
> parte, el urgente llamado de Walter Benjamin a “politizar el arte”,
> contrarrestando la “estetizaciónde la política” que caracterizó al fascismo, y la
> tentativa contemporánea, presente en muchos autores influidos por Benjamin,
> de “politizar la teología”, como respuesta esta vez a la teologización
> fundamentalista de la política.
