New resource on music and embodiment
Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:01AM Those who study issues of embodiment may be aware of the recent work
of philosopher Richard Shusterman on embodiment and what he calls
“somaesthetics,” culminating in his 2008 book /Body Consciousness: A
Philosophy of Mindfulness and Somaesthetics/.
I am happy to report that the current issue of the online journal
/Action, Criticism, and Theory for Music Education/, just released,
offers seven new essays exploring Shusterman’s ideas, often with a
focus on musical issues. Journal editor Wayne Bowman commissioned the
essays and contributes an introduction. The authors include Tomie
Hahn, Sven-Erik Holgerson, Roberta Lamb, Pentti Määttänen, J. Scott
Jordan, Kimberley Powell, and me; Shusterman contributes a substantial
essay in response. At 114 pages, the journal issue is a significant
contribution to the literature on music and embodiment.
